Brookes, in a cartoon ‘RIP Gene Wilder. Springtime for Brexit’ showing Theresa May and her three Brexit ministers marching in Storm Troopers’ uniform, added a speech bubble with the reworked lines:

Don’t be stupid, be a smarty

Come and join the Nasty Party.5

It was clearly his assumption that the reference would be understood, and that assumption is strengthened by a teasing reference made by the prime minister herself in her speech to the Conservative conference of October 2016. Surveying the Labour Party’s internal problems, she summarized: ‘You know what some people call them? The nasty party.’6 Clearly it was to be expected that her audience would understand the reference, but it seems equally evident that she and her speech-writers were confident that the soundbite would reach a wider public—which, as subsequent headlines attested, it did.7
